When I was in Davao some time ago, I had an interesting conversation with a friend of mine. She proposed that relationships were like jobs. When you don't have a job, nobody seems keen to offer you any. But when you're already in a nice comfortable job, that's when people start offering you new job opportunities. On the job part, she had a point. I do remember when I was working for a Japanese multinational before, I got new job offers every month.
And she was saying, romance was the same. If you're not dating anyone, nobody comes. But when you're already dating someone, that's when people start becoming interested in you.
I thought it was an interesting premise for a story. And so I wrote one.
The story follows Dell Santos, a bank executive who was quite successful. Just not in the romance department. Her friends tell her that relationships are like jobs: if you don't have one, no one wants you, but when you have one, that's when the offers start coming in. So when an old flame re-appears in her life, Dell needs the cooperation of one of her male friends to pretend to be her boyfriend to "up her market value."
Now, if only they'd cooperate...
The Boyfriend Deal is a 6-part story. They're classified under what we call "coffee break books," or books you can read within a coffee break.
